On 23 January 2023, tragedy struck along the Igando-Ikotun axis of Alimosho LGA, Lagos State, when members of a dedicated polio vaccination team were involved in a road accident. The incident sadly claimed the lives of two frontline workers — Barakat Rafiu and Latifat Akanni — and left two others, Chukwuneta Chibuike and Dada Fatia, with serious injuries.

In recognition of their sacrifice and to stand in solidarity with their families, the Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee (NNPPC) led by its Chairman, Past District Governor Joshua Hassan, paid condolence visits to the bereaved and injured families. He was joined by Dr. Uti-Momah (MOH), Mrs. Bankole Temitope (WFP), Mrs. Ajayi (Apex Nurse), and Mrs. Okedunwon (Apex CHO).

During the visit, the NNPPC Chairman expressed deep sympathy on behalf of Rotary International, praising the courage and dedication of the vaccination team who risk their lives daily to protect children against polio. A donation was also made to the families to provide some relief and support in the wake of the tragedy.

Rotary pays tribute to Barakat Rafiu and Latifat Akanni, whose untimely passing is a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by health workers in the fight against polio. Their legacy of courage, compassion, and service will live on in the countless children whose lives are protected because of their work.

To the injured survivors, Chukwuneta Chibuike and Dada Fatia, Rotary extends prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

This solemn visit reflects Rotary’s unwavering commitment not only to eradicating polio but also to supporting the frontline heroes and their families who make the fight possible.
