Eradicating polio remains one of the greatest health challenges of our time, and it relies heavily on the dedication and sacrifice of frontline workers who ensure that no child is left unvaccinated.
On 23 January 2023, tragedy struck when a vaccination team was involved in a road accident along the Igando-Ikotun axis of Alimosho LGA, Lagos State. Sadly, the accident claimed the lives of two vaccinators, Barakat Rafiu and Latifat Akanni, while two others, Chukwuneta Chibuike and Dada Fatia, sustained serious injuries.
In recognition of their courage and commitment, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, presented the Bob Keegan Polio Eradication Heroes Award and fund to the victims and their families. The award honors their bravery and highlights the immense risks frontline workers face in safeguarding children from polio.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, offered his condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that the Ministry of Health is working closely with the Ministry of Transportation to put preventive measures in place to avoid such tragedies in the future.
The ceremony was attended by notable leaders and partners, including: Past District Governor Yomi Adewumi, Vice Chairman, Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee (NNPPC), Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, WHO Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Mustafa, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Adesope, Zonal Coordinator representing the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Adam, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Aboyowa, African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) and Senior members of the WHO Nigeria team.
This solemn recognition is a reminder that behind every milestone in the fight against polio are brave men and women who give their all—even their lives—to protect children and communities.
