It has been said that the idle mind is the devil’s\u00a0<\/span>workshop. What then is an idle mind with a\u00a0<\/span>mobile communications device and cheap\u00a0<\/span>internet data?\u00a0<\/span>The answer to this question can be found in the repeated setbacks being suffered by our\u00a0<\/span>programme due to misinformation being\u00a0<\/span>passed around social media about vaccination\u00a0<\/span>by faceless, malicious and unscrupulous\u00a0<\/span>persons especially in the past few months.<\/span>
These folks have targeted known fault lines in\u00a0<\/span>our populace at a time of huge political and\u00a0<\/span>ethnic tensions to disseminate conjectures\u00a0<\/span>and outright falsehood under the guise of\u00a0<\/span>\u201cwarnings.\u201d These \u201cwarnings have led to panic a<\/span>nd mass hysteria which have, in the past few m<\/span>onths, led to some of the most significant n<\/span>umbers of cases of vaccine rejection and n<\/span>oncompliance that we have seen in our p<\/span>rogramme in recent times. An idle mind with a\u00a0<\/span>mobile communications device and a cheap i<\/span>nternet can be a devastating weapon against o<\/span>ur polio eradication efforts, if we let them.<\/span>
To older persons who have been involved in the str<\/span>uggle to achieve the elimination of wild polio f<\/span>rom Nigeria, the recent events must give a f<\/span>eeling of de ja vu.
