\u00a0Dr. Tunji Funsho, chair of Rotary\u2019s Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee, is recognized as New African Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Africans of 2020 for his work to rid the African region of the wild poliovirus.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was the driving force behind the program to eradicate polio from its last African redoubt in Nigeria. A lot of kudos for this went to Tunji Funsho, a Lagos-based cardiologist who chairs Rotary\u2019s Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee, for eradicating polio in Africa\u2019s most populous country.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has worked with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization (WHO), US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Unicef. Funsho led national immunization days to get millions of children vaccinated.<\/span><\/p>\n

The virus was endemic there along with Pakistan and Afghanistan. I<\/span>t\u2019s not often an entire continent eradicates a disease, but on Aug. 25, 2020, that happened when\u00a0Nigeria was declared polio-free<\/a>, clearing the virus from its last redoubt in all of Africa. Rotary\u2019s 2020 World Polio Day Online Global Update program on 24 October hails this year\u2019s historic achievement in polio eradication:<\/span> Africa being declared free of the wild polio virus<\/a><\/p>\n

Paralympic medalist and TV presenter Ade Adepitan, who co-hosts this year\u2019s program, says that the eradication of polio in Africa was personal for him. \u201cSince I was born in Nigeria, this achievement is close to my heart,\u201d says Adepitan, a polio survivor who contracted the disease as a child. \u201cI\u2019ve been waiting for this day since I was young.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He notes that, just a decade ago, three-quarters of all of the world\u2019s polio cases caused by the wild virus were contracted in Africa. Now, more than a billion Africans are safe from the disease. \u201cBut we\u2019re not done,\u201d Adepitan cautions. \u201cWe\u2019re in pursuit of an even greater triumph \u2014 a world without polio. And I can\u2019t wait.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rotary Foundation Trustee Geeta Manek, who co-hosts the program with Adepitan, says that World Polio Day is an opportunity for Rotary members to be motivated to \u201ccontinue this fight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She adds, \u201cRotarians around the world are working tirelessly to support the global effort to end polio.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
